Weighing a semen tank is more reliable than using a dipstick for several key reasons, based on common practices in livestock artificial insemination and cryogenic storing.

- Weighing provides a direct, quantitative measurement of the LN2 mass. Weighing allows you to track the evaporation rate over time. An unusually high rate can signal problems like vacuum loss, a cracked neck tube or insulation failure.

- Dipstick method relies on inserting a plastic stick, waiting a few seconds, removing it, and reading the frost line. This is indirect and prone to inaccuracies. A dipstick only shows the current level snapshot and won't reveal gradual degradation in tank efficiencies. Dipstick checks involve more handling: opening the lid longer, rising faster evaporation and potential contamination or disturbance of store samples.

ADVANTAGES OF USING A SCALE VS MEASURING STICK

  • Weight gives you an indication of the health of the tank, because the recorded weight data indirectly shows the evaporation rate. Tanks that evaporate more quickly than others can be replaced before they worsen and cause a risk to cells. 
  • The fill process is optimized. When you know how much nitrogen is in the tank you only need to fill it when it needs to be filled, thus saving staff time.
  • The amount of time in man-hours spent by a lab on checking the level of nitrogen in their tanks may be less as levels are visible both in the lab and from any computer.
  • Any time the lid is off, nitrogen will be lost, and when a dip stick is placed in liquid nitrogen it causes some of it to boil. So, the weight-based method prevents nitrogen from evaporating because opening the tank periodically to check nitrogen levels is no longer necessary. 
  • Liquid nitrogen costs money and so preventing evaporation saves money

Warranty on the scale base is5 years and warranty on the indicator is 2 years.
