SEMEN TANK MAINTENANCE

SEMEN TANK MAINTENANCE

Checklist for Optimal Semen Storage & Viability

WEEKLY

  • Measure & record LN₂ level (maintain ≥4 inches / 10 cm or per tank specs)
  • Log readings to monitor evaporation trends
  • Visual inspection: exterior for frost, dents, cracks, or damage
  • Check neck plug/cork for tight fit, wear, or frost — replace if needed
  • Keep canisters/straws below frost line; remove only one cane at a time
  • Ensure tank is stable, elevated, in clean/dry/ventilated area

MONTHLY

  • Clean exterior with mild soap & water; dry completely
  • Review LN₂ logs for abnormal evaporation patterns
  • Inspect canisters, handles, and plug for damage
  • Verify semen inventory labels and organization
  • Check storage environment (dry, elevated, away from sunlight/traffic)
  • Confirm PPE and safety/ventilation equipment ready

YEARLY

  • Full review of LN₂ logs and tank performance trends
  • Complete semen inventory audit (use FIFO rotation)
  • Replace neck plug/cork if worn
  • Professional inspection of vacuum integrity & holding time
  • Update emergency procedures, staff training, and backup plans

Critical Reminders
• Refill LN₂ every 6–8 weeks (or per usage) — never let level drop below 2 inches
• Transfer semen immediately if tank failure suspected
• Handle tank gently — avoid bumps, concrete floors, or excessive movement
• Excellent ventilation required for LN₂ safety
• Always follow your specific tank manufacturer’s guidelines
